An 8-year-old boy is the first reported fatality caused by Hurricane Dorian as it barreled into the Bahamas over the weekend.
Ingrid McIntosh told Eyewitness News that her grandson died on Abaco Island and her granddaughter, whose age she did not disclose, is still missing.
“I think they said he drowned,” the tearful grandmother said.
McIntosh said she has been unable to get in touch with her 31-year-old daughter, and her daughter may have been separated from her two children as they were trying to flee the storm.
Bahamian officials have not yet confirmed the death.
The Category 5 hurricane had 185-mph winds and a storm surge of up to 23 feet above normal tide levels Sunday.
It is expected to move “dangerously close” to Florida’s east coast late Monday into Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.
