Texas teacher put on leave over immigration tweets to Trump

A teacher in Texas has been placed on paid administrative leave after officials claim she tweeted to President Trump warning about illegal immigrants at her high school.

The Fort Worth school district placed an English teacher at Carter-Riverside High School on leave when it was determined she was behind the tweets, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.

One of the tweets requested Trump assist with removing “illegals from Fort Worth” and listed her phone numbers. Another post from the same account said that “Mexicans refuse to honor our flag.”

In one of the tweets, the teacher reportedly singled out the high school where she works, which is overwhelmingly Hispanic.

“Mr. President, Fort Worth Independent School district is loaded with illegal students from Mexico. Carter-Riverside High School has been taken over by them. Drug dealers are on our campus and nothing was done to them when the drug dogs found the evidence,” the tweet read.

Despite First Amendment protections, the district’s social media policy states that teachers can be held responsible for their use of social media.

“If an employee’s use of electronic media interferes with the employee’s ability to effectively perform his or her job duties, the employee is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment,” district policy reads.
