Library after-school program to start with new focus

Teens at an after-school program at the Howard County Library’s East Columbia branch this year will learn about empowerment, constructive use of time and making a commitment to learn.

The Teen Time program allows children to receive help with homework, take field trips and participate in career presentations, arts and crafts, and health and hygiene classes.

“This program means everything to me,” said Carmen Albuerne, the program’s leader and information specialist and instructor.

“I’m really passionate about working with students and helping them fulfill their potential.”

Albuerne recently receive a leadership award from the library for her two years of dedicated service.

This year, the program will have a new focus by helping the teens with life skills such as using time wisely, which is patterned after the Search Institute, an independent nonprofit that provides leadership, knowledge and resources to promote healthy children, youth and communities.

In the past, the students participated in Character Counts, a national program of the Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics, which teaches students different facets of character like trustworthiness, respect and responsibility.

While there’s plenty of time for work, students also can have fun.

Field trips in the past included going to the bowling alley, mall and movies and golfing, said Tanajah Hairston, 13, who attends Cradlerock School in Columbia before coming to the library.

“We can come here and have a great time with our friends,” she said. “It’s a great program, as long as you behave.”

Brian Gibson, 10, also a Cradlerock student, said he enjoyed being with his friends and starting his homework early.

The program is starting its fifth year and is open to students aged 10 to 14. Sessions for up to 25 children are held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

It is free and funded through grants and anonymous donors, Albuerne said.

The program starts Sept. 8. All those who register receive a free book bag with school supplies. To register, call Albuerne at 410-313-7707.
