Late night host Stephen Colbert poked fun at a series of clumsy moments that 2020 Democratic front-runner Joe Biden experienced during a live show following Thursday night’s Democratic debate.
“Just crank the Victrola and put on the Mitch Miller and then get yourself a new wireless set and gather around with the whole family and stare at it and listen to FDR give it good to Tojo and his boys,” Colbert quipped in reference to Biden’s comment that American families should be “gathered around the record player” at night.
Colbert, who had Biden as a guest on his show last week, pounced on Biden’s affirmation of American ideals and used it as a matter-of-fact deadpan.
“This is America,” Biden told opponent Bernie Sanders at one point in the debate.
“Take that, take that folks who say Biden is gaffe-prone,” Colbert commented. “He just accurately identified which country he is standing in. He’s back baby.”
Biden, who often deprecates himself and acknowledges he is prone to verbal mistakes, was attacked by his rivals from every angle during the party’s third debate.
Dark horse challenger Julián Castro made the most personal of these, questioning whether Biden could remember statements he had made on the debate stage just minutes earlier.
“The crowd did not like Julián playing the old-man card,” Colbert joked. “Don’t worry Julián. It’s not like old people vote.”
