Bloomberg & Paterson Headed for Faceoff

New York’s accidental governor David Paterson is likely to face stiff competition for re-election in 2010. Andrew Cuomo and other Democrats are regarded as potential primary challengers and there’s speculation that Rudy Giuliani will run on the Republican line. But perhaps his biggest re-election threat is current New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Bloomberg is term-limited out of Gracie Mansion in 2009, and his actions make it clear that he’s open to remaining in public life. With that as background, it was interesting that on Monday the New York Post’s highly-regarded Albany nureau chief Fred Dicker reported that Paterson privately savaged Bloomberg:

Mayor Bloomberg is a nasty, untrustworthy, tantrum-prone liar who “has little use” for average New Yorkers – like the 1,500 workers who would have lost their jobs had OTB closed, a furious Gov. Paterson has said privately. “He appears to be self-destructing,” the governor said. According to a source with firsthand knowledge of Paterson’s comments, the governor said that during talks last week on OTB’s future, Bloomberg threw the same kind of bizarre tantrums that disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer had been known for. “He has the same kind of anger that reminds you of Spitzer,” Paterson said. “I think he’s starting to be concerned that he can’t get anything done…”

Paterson subsequently denied the accuracy of the quotes — prompting Dicker to call him out. Dicker says that Paterson knows who the source of the story is, and suggests it might even have been the Governor himself:

The Post’s report was based on a source “with firsthand knowledge of Paterson’s comments.” Let’s see, how many people could that be? Paterson himself? Perhaps Michelle Paterson, the governor’s wife, or Charles O’Byrne, the governor’s chief of staff? Another possibility is Communications Director Risa Heller.

Dicker has been in the business for years, and his reputation is not that of a liar. Paterson’s smart move is probably to stop drawing attention to the incident. But further down the road, it has to make it more likely that Bloomberg will look to Albany once his term is up.
