Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Iran would work with Palestinian terrorist groups to oppose Israel and President Trump’s proposed peace deal.
Khamenei, speaking Wednesday in Tehran on the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, said his country would continue to fund terrorist groups in the West Bank and Gaza.
“We believe that Palestinian-armed organizations will stand and continue resistance, and the Islamic Republic sees supporting Palestinian groups as its duty,” the 80-year-old leader said.
“So it will support them however it can and as much as it can, and this support is the desire of the Islamic system and the Iranian nation,” he added.
Iran is a top funder for Hezbollah in Lebanon and also finances the Gaza-based terrorist groups Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas. All three of those groups seek Israel’s destruction and have killed civilians.
Khamenei also railed against Trump’s so-called “deal of the century” peace plan in a series of tweets.
The deal proposes a two-state solution in which Israel would freeze settlement construction for a period of four years and maintain sovereignty over much of the Jordan Valley. The deal was met with a positive reception from Israel but was strongly rejected by Palestinians.
“The American plot of the ‘Deal of the Century’ will die before Trump dies,” Khamenei tweeted.
