A woman who corresponded with the man accused of killing intern Chandra Levy testified that he mentioned a dead girl in a letter to her in 2003.
Ingmar Guandique is on trial in D.C. Superior Court. Prosecutors say he raped and murdered the 24-year-old intern while she was jogging in Rock Creek Park on May 1, 2001.
Maria Mendez, a 48-year-old federal employee from Miami, said Tuesday she corresponded with 10 or 11 inmates since 1991. Guandique, in a California prison for earlier attacks on two women in Rock Creek Park, sent Mendez a letter in 2003 asking to get to know her. A fellow inmate had given Mendez’s contact information to Guandique.
Mendez requested Guandique send a letter outlining his criminal history. His response included mentioning a “dead girl,” but over the course of their communications the Salvadoran immigrant never admitted to killing the unnamed girl.
Earlier Tuesday, FBI scientist Cary Oien testified that no hairs or fibers from Guandique were found on the clothes Levy was wearing when she was attacked.
