DC metro unveils new map signaling near completion of Silver Line after eight years

The Washington, D.C., metro unveiled its new map on Friday, including several new Silver Line stations, signaling the near completion of the line after eight years of construction.

The previous map of the metro included the new stations but in a faded color, showing them as incomplete. The new map includes the stations in full color, along with renaming five other stations. The much-anticipated Silver Line extension cost an estimated $3 billion and will extend for 11 1/2 miles, according to the Washington Post.

Metro officials told the outlet that it will take an estimated one month to replace all 5,000 maps across every metro station. A new station was also added along the Blue and Yellow lines, Potomac Yard, close to Reagan National Airport. It is set to open this fall.

METRO ANNOUNCES NAME CHANGES TO FIVE STATIONS

One of the Silver Line stations will connect the metro to Dulles International Airport, allowing those arriving by plane to more easily enter the U.S. capital.

The new map also shows a change in the name of five metro stations, approved by the metro’s board last week. The name changes were in response to the departure of landmarks near the stations bearing the name, or some similar change, according to the Washington Post. Sign changes in the stations are already ongoing.

Metro officials have set the estimated start date for the opening of the Silver Line in late fall but said it might be delayed if federal regulators don’t allow them to use more of their metro car fleet.
