Combing through writings on Australian pop musician Lenka, words such as “cute,” “enchanting,” “pixie,” “saucy” and “tart” are used to describe her or her music.
Throw in “infectious,” “catchy” and “tireless,” and you get a better understanding of this ever-touring musician.
“You can’t assume what affect you have on people,” laughed Lenka — whose full name is Lenka Kripac, but just goes by her first name — from her Los Angeles home. “I would say ‘whimsical.’ ”
That Lenka, who brings her style of sweet pop music to the Rock N Roll Hotel Monday evening, was at home for an interview, which is a rarity. She tours frequently estimating that she spent 10 of the last 12 months out on the road and has visited 18 different countries as a performer.
“A lot, a lot, a lot,” Lenka responded when asked how much she tours. “I’ve had a week here now, which is special.”
“It’s made we wish I was a small-own artist,” she added, jokingly.
Lenka’s long and wide touring is a tribute to her growing worldwide appeal. She’s had moderate success here in the States with her self-titled debut released last September. You’ve probably heard “The Show” on an advertisement for Old Navy, and many of her songs have been featured on the television programs “Grey’s Anatomy” and “90210.” But instead of being over-the-top huge in just one market, she’s had minor success in many markets, meaning trips like the one to Singapore once she’s finished with the East Coast later this month.
“I do love it checking out different cultures,” said Lenka, 31. “Playing music is what I do. I see it as a life experience and not just work.”
Lenka had success on Australian television and was a member of the band Decoder Ring before she pursued a solo career in music. She said she has no plans to go back to acting full time.
“I have the urge to have more creative control,” she said. “I could never have a full-time career.”
Recently, Lenka has been working on some new songs, trying them out in front of a live audience before she plans to head into the studio next year.
Actually, much like her touring, she writes nearly constantly. Which is all part of Lenka’s keys to success.
“It’s kind of a necessity for me,” she said. “It’s a habitual thing to do.”
