The White House on Thursday guaranteed that middle and lower income people would see a tax cut under President Trump’s tax reform plan, even though officials have not released enough specifics about the plan to support that claim.
“Everyone in the middle class should know this president’s plan is going to make sure they have more in their pocket,” Spicer said.
When asked if that was a guarantee, Spicer added, “The position of the White House is that the goal of this president’s tax plan is to provide them and lower income people with more money and a tax cut, yes.”
That statement came on the heels of the announcement of Trump’s tax proposal Wednesday, which described a plan to reduce the number of individual tax brackets from seven to three. However, the White House didn’t provide specific details on those new brackets, such as what income levels each bracket would cover.
Earlier Thursday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin couldn’t guarantee middle class Americans would receive a tax cut under Trump’s plan.
During the briefing, Spicer dodged a question on whether it’s fair for people to question how Trump’s tax plan will benefit the president and his family.
“The president’s plan, right now, is something that every American should worry about, hopefully, how it’s going to affect them,” Spicer said.
He added that more people are concerned with how Trump’s tax proposals will affect them, their family and their employers than they care about how Trump himself could benefit from a tax cut.
“That’s up to every individual to ask, but I would guess most Americans would applaud what the president’s doing to spur economic growth and job creation in this country,” Spicer said.
