A rainy Friday morning in Charles Village was interrupted by tragedy as a woman police have yet to identify allegedly jumped to her death from a parking garage.
Residents stood in stunned silence as police cordoned off the alley just off St. Paul and 34th streets, where the body laid, covered by a white sheet.
“I heard a thud, but Ijust thought it was construction,” said Maya Garza, a Johns Hopkins University student who lives in The Marylander apartment building next to the alley where the body was found.
Police investigators on the scene said the victim was a middle-aged woman. One onlooker who did not want to be identified said a janitor in a nearby building was an eyewitness.
“He saw her jump off the building. I think her car is parked up there,” he said pointing to the top of the garage, which was marked with yellow police tape.
Security videotapes were being sought and witnesses were being questioned, police said.
“There were no indications of foul play,” said an officer who did not want to be identified.
Richard Nolan 44, another resident of The Marylander, said he came upon the scene just after the body was discovered.
“Two constructions workers were having trouble calling the police, so I called them,” he said. “At first I thought she might have jumped out of our building. We had a suicide here a few years ago. It?s terrible.”
