Former Clinton spokesman quick to attack Devin Nunes’ replacement

It didn’t take long, but one of Hillary Clinton’s campaign officials is already casting doubt on one of the Republicans taking control of the Russian interference investigation after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes temporarily recused himself.

Brian Fallon, the former press secretary for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, set his sights on Texas Rep. Michael Conaway, who will now lead the probe alongside Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., and Tom Rooney, R-Fla.

“Rep. Conaway – Nunes’ replacement at the helm of the House’s Russia probe – does not seem to take Russia’s election meddling very seriously,” Fallon tweeted Thursday. Included in the tweet is a quote from Conaway in January when he compared the use of Mexican soap opera actors to rally Democratic voters to Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“[Former Senate Minority Leader] Harry Reid and the Democrats brought in Mexican soap opera stars, singers and entertainers who had immense influence in those communities into Las Vegas, to entertain, get out the vote and so forth,” Conaway told the Dallas Morning News. “Those are foreign actors, foreign people, influencing the vote in Nevada. You don’t hear the Democrats screaming and saying one word about that.”

Conaway was asked whether he thought this was as much of an issue as Russia meddling in the election. He replied: “Sure it is, it’s foreign influence. If we’re worried about foreign influence, let’s have the whole story.”

In a separate tweet Fallon said Nunes stepping aside is “a positive move, but it is still no substitute for an independent commission.”
