Paul Flores found guilty of 1996 murder of Kristin Smart


Paul Flores was found guilty of first-degree murder in connection to the 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart.

The verdict was handed down Tuesday in San Luis Obispo County, California.

Ruben Flores, Paul’s father, was found not guilty of being an accessory to the crime. He was accused of helping dispose of Smart’s body.

Smart disappeared after walking home from a fraternity party while she was a student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Her body was never found by authorities, and she was formally declared dead in 2002.

Both Paul and Ruben Flores were charged and arrested in April 2021 after authorities found “items of interest” allegedly linking the father-son duo to Smart’s case.

Paul Flores now faces 25 years to life in prison with the guilty verdict. Sentencing has been set for Dec. 9.

The Flores pair were tried at the same time with separate juries, but with both verdicts read at the same time. The jury in Ruben’s case came to a verdict Monday, while the jury in Paul’s case came to a verdict Tuesday.
