Baltimore Mayor Bernard Young blasted President Trump for his comments Saturday morning that Rep. Elijah Cummings’ is a “brutal bully” and that his Baltimore-based district is “far worse” than the southern border.
“It’s completely unacceptable for the political leader of our country to denigrate a vibrant American City like Baltimore, and to viciously attack U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings a patriot and a hero,” Young said in a statement.

“Mr. Trump’s rhetoric is hurtful and dangerous to the people he’s sworn to represent,” the Democrat added. “As the Mayor of Baltimore, I won’t stand for anyone, not even the alleged Leader of the Free World, attacking our great City or our representative to Congress. Mr. Trump, you are a disappointment to the people of Baltimore, our country, and to the world.”
Trump’s tirade against Cummings appeared to some as racist, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Rep. Cummings is a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague,” she tweeted. “We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.”

Cummings erupted at acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan earlier this month during a House Oversight Committee hearing after McAleenan said Homeland was doing its “level best” to deal with the ongoing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“What does that mean? What does that mean when a child is sitting in their own feces, can’t take a shower? Come on man,” Cummings shouted.
In a rebuke of Cummings, which appeared to be prompted by a Fox News segment, Trump tweeted that his district “is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
“Rep[sic] Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous,” Trump tweeted. “His district is considered the Worst in the USA…As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place”
