An arm of the Trump campaign that bills itself as “Women for Trump” will tour Iowa by bus from Jan. 16 to 17, setting up a split screen as senators in Washington gear up for President Trump’s impeachment trial.
Lara Trump, senior campaign adviser Mercedes Schlapp, and campaign National Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany will meet with supporters at events scheduled in Des Moines, Sioux City, and Davenport.
The Senate trial is expected to begin by the end of January.
The campaign has consistently sought to secure support for the president among women, who back him in far fewer numbers than men, often wielding the president’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump. Winning the votes of women who didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 is what Lara described last year as her biggest challenge going into 2020.
Trump has been widely excoriated for his remarks about women and has been accused of rape and harassment. A judge ruled Friday that a defamation suit against the president by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accuses him of raping her, will move forward.
A North Carolina native, Lara Trump has proven a valuable emissary for the Trump campaign. At a Buckeye State warm-up event for Trump’s Thursday night rally, she described the president’s Iran strategy as “peace through strength” or there could be “hell to pay.” She appears weekly in news round up videos on the campaign’s website. And she is popular with voters.
A Club for Growth poll in November registered overwhelming support for her in a hypothetical primary match-up, winning by 30 points in New York’s second congressional district, Steve King’s soon-to-be vacated seat. In an interview last year, King shared his favorable impression of her from a fundraising event they attended together. “She handles herself very well. She’s good with people,” he said.
“Women for Trump” includes campaign officials and advisers, as well as outside supporters such as Trump’s personal pastor Paula White and entertainers Diamond and Silk.
Attendees registering for next week’s event are invited to join a Trump Leadership Victory Day, which will feature political organizing events programmed to mobilize potential voters.
