An American University student is accused of driving down four people outside a bar at a New York golf club early Sunday morning, police say.
Two of the victims remained in critical condition in a Manhattan hospital Monday afternoon after 19-year-old Sayed Khaled El-Waraky, of Vienna, allegedly plowed into them with a 2005 Jaguar. The incident occurred about 2:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Soundview Cafe in Glen Cove, N.Y., said Detective Sgt. Thomas Fitzpatrick.
An “unruly” El-Waraky had been kicked out of the establishment and appeared to be leaving in the car following a brief confrontation in the parking lot.
He turned the vehicle around, however, and drove toward a crowd of about 30 people, Fitzpatrick said.
“According to witnesses, he just drove straight at them and whoever got in his way got hit,” the detective said.
The man is a “non-degree” student at American University, having enrolled in business classes for the fall 2005 and spring 2006 semesters, according to school spokeswoman Maralee Csellar.
“He is not considered a full-time student,” she said.
The two other victims did not suffer serious injuries, according to Fitzpatrick.
El-Waraky faces charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, and three counts of assault, the detective said. He was held without bail at Nassau County Correctional Facility following an arraignment Monday.
Calls to his Vienna residence were not answered.
