Fix, a jazz singer from the Washington area, released a new single “Change The World” on iTunes last week. Proceeds from the song’s sale benefit the Whitman-Walker Clinic until Oct. 23. Fox will perform the song Saturday at the 24th Annual AIDS Walk Washington.
What inspired you to write the song?
I have a lot of friends in Washington who are either HIV-positive or also have been affected in some way over the years through the HIV crisis. In a past life I actually was a nurse, so I’ve worked in medicine and spent a little bit of time working in primary care in a clinic that treated a lot of HIV.
What’s the message behind the song?
The song is a message of remembrance and hope at the same time. One of my goals was that I wanted the song to be respectful of that person in the audience who just lost someone last week, and yet I didn’t want it to be downer and not without hope. There’s light in the song and there’s a message of hope that together we can change the world.
As a D.C. resident what’s it like giving back to your community?
In a word, it’s a privilege to be a part of the idea…. It’s not about my pride. Even for me singing the song I get onto the mind of people that I know who are gone now. This is for them and it’s for those of us who are still here and suffering with the grief.
Do you see your music as an outlet for philanthropic outreach?
This is my gift to pay forward, and if there’s a way to connect that dynamic to charity where it can be really effective that thrills me. – Anna Waugh
