Man tried to carjack tour bus near White House: Police

A man was arrested after D.C. police said he tried to carjack a tour bus near the White House on Sunday.

Police said 24-year-old Tyler Jackson attempted to steal a double-decker tour bus around 8 p.m. on the 1600 block of H Street NW, across the park from the White House. A U.S. Secret Service officer responded to the scene.

Fox 5 reported that about 60 people were on the top deck of the bus as it was stopped in front of the White House when a man screamed at the driver, ran on board, and began beating the driver. A good Samaritan came to the driver’s aid.

According to an incident report, Jackson was charged with simple assault on the driver, unarmed carjacking, failure to obey, and resisting arrest.

Big Bus Washington D.C. said in a statement to Fox 5 that the driver is doing OK.

“As expected the driver remains in a state of shock, but fortunately in good condition. We are incredibly appreciative of the quick response by the authorities. The safety of our team members and guests is incredibly important to us. Our buses do include onboard cameras and we will continue to work with the authorities as the investigation continues.”
