Iran could send Russia ‘more destructive weapons,’ White House suggests

The White House lashed out at Iran over reports that Tehran is weighing whether to provide Russia with newly destructive weapons in the war against Ukraine.

President Joe Biden’s press secretary pointed to reports of what appeared to be Iranian “kamikaze” drones used in an attack on Ukraine’s capital on Monday and said stronger weapons could be on the way.

“Iran continues to lie about this,” Karine Jean-Pierre said. “Meanwhile, according to these new reports, Iran is considering selling still more destructive weapons to support an invasion they claim to oppose.”

The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran in response to the weapons transfers and will continue enforcing these, she added.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan warned in July that Russia was preparing to acquire weapons from Iran, including drones. In September, he said the U.S. was looking for additional methods to slow Iran’s ability to manufacture weapons systems for sale to Russia.
