Leslie Johnson asks for delay of sentencing

An attorney for former Prince George’s County Councilwoman Leslie Johnson has asked a U.S. District Court judge to delay her sentencing hearing.

Johnson, whose sentencing hearing was scheduled for Oct. 13, resigned in July after pleading guilty to conspiring to tamper with witnesses and evidence in an FBI investigation of pay-to-play schemes in Prince George’s County.

In a motion filed Monday, Johnson’s attorney, Shawn Wright, wrote that “scheduling conflicts” had come up and requested that the sentencing be moved to a later date.

James Crowell IV, the assistant U.S. attorney leading the government’s case against Johnson, does not oppose the delay, Wright also wrote.

By pleading guilty, Johnson admitted to stuffing $79,600 in cash in her bra and underwear and flushing a $100,000 check down the toilet at the instruction of her husband, then-County Executive Jack Johnson.

Jack Johnson had a sentencing scheduled for September that was delayed until Dec. 6.
