State of the Union 2023: MTG trolls Biden ahead of president’s address

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) rebutted arguments against building a wall along the United States’s southern border Tuesday. She argued that Democrats know that walls work and cited the fact that a fence currently surrounds the U.S. Capitol ahead of the State of the Union.

“I can assure you that the Democrats believe in walls because they’ve erected one around the Capitol because President Joe Biden is delivering his State of the Union address to the country,” Greene said during a hearing on the border.

Greene has long been an unabashed advocate of constructing a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a major 2016 campaign pledge by former President Donald Trump.

The fencing comes as a form of added security ahead of Tuesday’s address. Decisions regarding the Capitol complex are made by the sergeants-at-arms of the House and Senate and the architect of the Capitol, who was appointed by Trump. The final decision to have the fence was made by the architect.

Other conservative lawmakers also used the fence as “proof” that Democrats, including Biden, supported walls in general.

“Walls are up around the People’s House because the President is coming to Congress,” Rep. Russell Fry (R-SC) tweeted. “Just a friendly reminder that Joe Biden knows walls work. #BidensBorderCrisis.”

Another congressman, Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX), claimed that if the U.S. could place a wall around the Capitol, it could build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) admitted that the wall was decided by the architect, but he did not agree with the decision.

“The Secret Service requested it. The sergeant-at-arms on the Senate side agreed, and so did the architect of the Capitol,” McCarthy told reporters. “The sergeant-at-arms on the House side didn’t see the need for it. I just don’t think it’s the right look. There’s not a need.”
