The Justice Department released statistics on Thursday showing criminal victimization in the United States showed a drop in violent crimes from 2013 to 2015.
The survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics showed a drop in violent crime rates from 23.2 victims per 1,000 people in 2013 to 18.6 per 1,000 people in 2015. Violent crime includes rape, assault and robbery.

The agency — which is part of the DOJ — also found no statically significant change in the rate of violent from between 2014 and 2015.
Rape and sexual assaults increased from 284,350 in 2014 to 431,840 in 2015, the survey found.
A report from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting publication found that crime rates had risen in 2015, however.
Released last month, the report showed a 3.9 percent increase in the estimated number of violent crimes last year when compared to 2014 data.
The BJS survey comes amid rising concerns of a spike in violence nationwide. Earlier this week, Chicago surpassed 600 homicides in 2016.
