President Trump on Monday questioned whether texts in which former FBI lawyer Lisa Page talked to former FBI official Peter Strzok about opening opening some sort of “case” was evidence of a conspiracy against him, though it’s unclear what “case” the two were discussing.
“We need to open the case we’ve been waiting on now while Andy is acting,” Strzok wrote in texts reported by Fox News, referring to then-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.
“We need to lock in [redacted]. In a formal chargeable way. Soon,” Page texted back.
“I agree,” Strzok responded. “I’ve been pushing and I’ll reemphasize with Bill.”
Trump quoted those texts in a tweet and argued the conversation could be evidence that Strzok and Page were working within the FBI to undermine his presidency.
“Wow, a conspiracy caught?” he wrote.
Trump also noted the Fox report said Page testified to the House Judiciary and Oversight committees that there was no evidence of collusion.
A Fox News report Monday said the texts were under “fresh scrutiny” after Page told congressional investigators there was at the time no evidence of Russian collusion when she testified in mid-July. Sources from the House Intelligence and House Judiciary committees told Fox the texts now need further explanation.
