AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Democrats who’ve wrested control of the Maine Legislature back from Republicans are poised to reverse a GOP health insurance overhaul when the 2013 session gets going.
The law, passed in 2011, seeks to lower health insurance costs and cover more residents through a series of market changes. It adds a $4 charge to the monthly premium of every resident with private coverage to pay for a new pool of high-risk people with the highest health care expenses.
Democratic House Speaker-to-be Mark Eves of North Berwick says the law has hurt a lot of people, especially in rural areas, and lawmakers will take a fresh look at it.
Republican House Minority leader Ken Fredette of Newport says his party will agree to that if there are ways to improve the law.
