House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy slammed Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to create a House oversight committee to oversee distribution of coronavirus relief funds.
“Speaker Pelosi’s ambition to create a select committee on the coronavirus crisis isn’t about oversight,” the California Republican tweeted on Friday along with a video clip of a recent Fox News appearance. “She wants to exploit this crisis in order to fundamentally restructure America and advance her political agenda.”
In the clip, McCarthy argued the special oversight panel announced by Pelosi this week is “redundant” because the coronavirus relief bill that was recently passed contained provisions for three oversight entities.

McCarthy said what is “most telling here” is how Pelosi appointed House Majority Whip James Clyburn to be chairman on the panel, pointing to a report that said the South Carolina Democrat told fellow Democrats in a conference call the coronavirus relief bill is a “tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”
Clyburn’s office maintains that comment was taken out of context.
“The committee will be empowered to examine all aspects of the federal response to coronavirus and to assure that the taxpayers’ dollars are being wisely and efficiently spent to save lives, deliver relief, and benefit our economy,” Pelosi said about the decision to create the panel.
