New kit helps people learn CPR

A new first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation kit aims to teach people how to react in a medical emergency.

“It?s something they can do in the comfort of their home with friends and family,” said Nick Geier Red Cross director of health and safety.

The First Aid and CPR for Everyone kit teaches people how to recognize:

? When someone needs CPR;

? How to position the injured person;

? Where to place their hands for compressions;

? How to time the compressions.

The Red Cross Central Maryland chapter has stocked up on kits, hoping people will be more apt to learn CPR skills if they can make it a social experience and learn the steps at their own pace.

Each year nationwide, the American Red Cross trains fewer than 12 million people in CPR, but only about 5.5 million people learn basic first aid.
