Former first lady Michelle Obama’s new book “Becoming” is the best selling book of 2018, based on NPD BookScan data.
“Becoming” is being bought at a rate much faster than usual for political memoirs and nonfiction books in general.
Crown Publishing announced Friday that the book topped 2 million copies sold within the first 15 days, according to the Associated Press.
The 2 million figure includes sales from hardcover books, audio books, and e-books in the U.S. and Canada.
Former first lady Hillary Clinton’s memoir “Living History” took a full month to sell 1 million copies, and former President George W. Bush’s book “Decision Points” took several weeks to reach 2 million.
More recently, former FBI director James Comey’s memoir “A Higher Loyalty” sold only 600,000 copies in all formats in the first week on sale.
Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury,” which gave an inside look book at President Trump’s White House, sold 200,000 hardcover copies in the first week, and the book, which was released in January, sold more than 2 million copies by mid-April.
Clinton’s memoir “What Happened” outlined her perspective of what went down during the 2016 presidential election, which she lost to Trump, and that memoir sold more than 300,000 copies in all formats in its first week on sale.
“Becoming,” which was released Nov. 13, has crushed all of these book sales, and Obama is in the middle of a promotional tour alongside guests like media executive Oprah Winfrey and actress Reese Witherspoon.
There are currently 3.4 million hardcover copies in print of “Becoming.”
