Five injured in propane explosion

A man handling a propane tank in a Hampden row house was injured in an explosion Tuesday that knocked down a wall ? sending him and four children to a hospital, fire officials said.

“We don?t know exactly what he was trying to do,” said Baltimore City fire spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on the 3400 block of Hickory Avenue.

The explosion knocked down a wall into an adjacent row house, causing the wall to collapse on four children, Cartwright said.

The children did not suffer serious injuries, but the 48-year-old man, whom officials declined to identify, suffered second-degree burns described as “serious.”

The building will likely be condemned, but there is no immediate danger to neighbors, Cartwright said.
