Scott Walker: Coronavirus threatens to sink Trump in Wisconsin

President Trump is in trouble in Wisconsin if the effects of the coronavirus pandemic do not subside by Election Day, according to former Gov. Scott Walker.

“I think it still boils down to a referendum on the president. They’ll beat up on [Joe] Biden, and they’ll raise some concerns,” Walker told Politico.

Trump will win the battleground state if people feel good about their health and the economy, he said. If not, “it’s much more difficult” for Trump, Walker added.

In 2016, Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since 1984.

Tommy Thompson, the state’s longest-serving governor, said Trump needs to make more visits to Wisconsin, as well as focus on winning over female voters and disenchanted senior voters who are unhappy with his response to the health crisis.

“Trump has got to come into Wisconsin and spend some quality time here — and more than once,” Thompson told the outlet.

Wisconsin is pivotal to Trump’s reelection strategy, but polling shows he’s trailing Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee. An average of polling data shows Biden leading Trump by nearly 3 points in the state.
