Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has been criminally charged by the Justice Department following a pattern of fabrications related to his employment and educational history since he entered office in January.
Santos’s exact charges are currently unknown as they are under seal, but the representative is expected to appear in federal court in New York as early as Wednesday and could be arrested tomorrow, per multiple outlets. This is the latest step in a series of state and federal investigations into the representative.
GEORGE SANTOS ANNOUNCES REELECTION BID DESPITE CONTROVERSIES
Prosecutors from the Justice Department and FBI in New York and Washington have been investigating allegations of false statements in Santos’s campaign finance filings and other areas.
The Justice Department declined to comment to the Washington Examiner on the investigation.
Santos said he was unaware of the charges.
“This is news to me,” he said in a brief phone interview with Associated Press. “You’re the first to call me about this.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) addressed the charges during a press conference Tuesday.
“I’ll look at the charges,” McCarthy, who has been asked previously whether congressional, federal, or state investigations will affect Santos’s future in the House, said.
Santos announced his reelection bid on April 17 despite several Democrats, as well as New York Republicans, calling on Santos to resign from Congress.
During his time in office, Santos has been accused of breaking campaign finance laws, violating federal conflict of interest laws, and lying about where he attended school and worked before launching his 2022 campaign. The House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into Santos in March.
