VDOT wins award for recycling pavement

The Virginia Department of Transportation will receive an award later this month for its innovative pavement recycling.

The agency rebuilt a section of Interstate 81 using recycled materials from the existing interstate. The process saved millions of dollars and cut construction time by two-thirds, according to VDOT.

“We expect to continue using these processes, where appropriate, to save money and materials as we rebuild older roads throughout the commonwealth,” Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement.

Roads & Bridges magazine and the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association will present VDOT with the 2012 Recycling Award in late February.
