Free tampons for all workers under new Dem bill

Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., introduced legislation this week that would require all U.S. employers to provide free tampons, pads and other “menstrual products” to their employees at their bathrooms at work.

The Menstrual Products for Employees Act would amend the Occupational Safety and Health Act to issue a rule putting that requirement in place. The bill says employers would have to “provide menstrual hygiene products free of charge for employees in the bathrooms of the employer.”

The bill doesn’t say the rule would only affect medium or large-sized companies, meaning that even the smallest employers would have to comply, as well as government employers.

Meng also proposed legislation this week offering a tax credit for women who buy menstrual products. Her Menstrual Products Tax Credit Act would give women a $120 tax credit.

A third bill from Meng, the Accurate Labelling of Menstrual Products Act, would require ingredients and components to be listed on the packaging of menstrual products. That bill defines menstrual products as tampons, pads and other related products.
