ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. (AP) — The West Feliciana Parish School Board will join a cooperative of school districts that hope to save money through bulk purchases of computers and software and by devising online courses.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/ZwD2mX) the district will pay $1,500 to join the District Cooperative of Louisiana.

The program is administered by the Vermilion Parish School Board.

West Feliciana supervisor of federal programs Joyce Edwards said the district is working with the cooperative now on devising tests for second-grade math students that are tied to new national curriculum standards.

The parish also will receive test modules written by other participating districts in subjects covering kindergarten through 12th-grade.

The parish will pay second-grade teachers to prepare the math tests over the summer but will save money by not having to pay other teachers in the other subjects, Edwards said.

Superintendent Hollis Milton said the curriculum guides will be vetted by a large number of educators across the state.

Milton said the program sprang from concerns about falling support from the state Department of Education.

“It gives us leverage on prices and services,” he said.
