The former head of law enforcement in Alabama was arrested for filing a false police report.
Spencer Collier, 46, served for three years the state’s secretary of law enforcement. He turned himself in to law enforcement in Daphne, Ala., after allegedly filing a police report with false information Thursday night. That same day a judge granted his wife a temporary restraining order against him, according to AL.com.
Collier claims the arrest was an embarrassing misunderstanding and said he has no doubt that he will be exonerated.
“My adult son, who is a recovering addict and multiple felon, used my bank card without my permission,” Collier said in a statement. “I filed a police report, being this is the second time in a year that he has done this. I was unaware that my wife (we are currently estranged) gave him permission. He pressed charges because I listed him as the suspect.”
In the petition from abuse filed by his wife, she alleges Collier threatened her with physical abuse and is “having problems with depression and anxiety and is under extreme pressure.” She asked that her husband undergo a mental evaluation.
In addition to serving as the state’s top cop, Collier spent two years as Alabama’s director of homeland security. Collier resigned earlier this week from his position as police chief of Selma, Ala., citing health issues.
