Conservative author and commentator Ann Coulter is doubtful President Trump will adopt hard-line immigration stances if reelected.
On Tuesday’s episode of the Daily Caller podcast, Coulter was skeptical that Trump would adhere to his promises made on immigration during his 2016 presidential campaign if he wins a second term, speculating he may use the bully pulpit to promote his family’s businesses.
“I figure one way or another, we may only have — well at this point, what is it, 5 months left? — to get any of these promises fulfilled,” she began. “He didn’t care much about his promises when he was facing reelection. How much do you think he’s going to care when he’s not facing reelection? I mean at that point, it’s just going to be pedal to the metal promoting Ivanka and Jared’s business interests.”
The pundit added that she has run into Trump team members at various social gatherings who have demanded she refrain from being critical of Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior presidential adviser.
“I even offered a deal, this was probably six months ago, from someone asking me to stop being so mean to Jared. I said, ‘OK, have Trump endorse Kris Kobach, and I mean now. We don’t wait for him to win the primary and then at the last minute step forward like he did the last time. Now. Endorse Kris Kobach, running for the US Senate from Kansas, magnificent human being. Donald Trump without any of the disabilities,'” she said.
During the podcast, Coulter also praised Trump’s former Attorney General Jeff Sessions for the Justice Department’s actions on immigration policies, admonishing the president for not utilizing his constitutional powers to build a wall along the United States-Mexico border.
“This idea that you don’t do anything because, ‘Oh, a district court will say no!’ OK, that doesn’t mean you don’t do something,” she said, lauding former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach for his proposed ideas to curb immigration into the U.S.
Over the weekend, Coulter vehemently defended Sessions against attacks from Trump, calling him the “the most disloyal actual retard that has ever set foot in the Oval Office.”
“Trump didn’t build the wall and never had any intention of doing so. The ONE PERSON in the Trump administration who did anything about immigration was Jeff Session. And this lout attacks him,” Coulter also said.
Sessions is aiming to retake his old Alabama Senate seat, running against former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville in a Republican primary scheduled for July 14. Trump endorsed Tuberville over Sessions, claiming that his former attorney general let the country “down” by recusing himself from any involvement into special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia inquiry.
“3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began,” Trump tweeted.
“Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!” Trump said in a tweet.
Sessions responded to Trump over social media, writing, “Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”
Coulter weighed in on the argument between Trump and Sessions, contrasting the president’s behavior with the reaction of Sessions.
“Observe: a gentleman — and a MAN, not a whining, blame-shifting, gigantic fruitcake,” she tweeted.
