There is only one caveat to mention with Fisher’s caramel popcorn: You can’t stop eating it.
“It’s sinfully delicious,” said Sister Patricia Smith, of Baltimore.
For more than 70 years, the Fisher family has served its delicious popcorn and taffy to generations of Marylanders from its location at Talbot Street and the Boardwalk in Ocean City.
“My father and I drove down the ocean together in the late 1950s,” said Larry Lowrimore, who grew up in Linthicum. The rest of the family was already at the beach in late August. Lowrimore had high school football practice and his dad worked at Westinghouse.
“Fisher’s was the first stop we made, when my father and I drove into Ocean City in the 1950s,” said Lowrimore. “It’s right up there with steamed crabs and Thrasher’s fries.”
Fisher’s serves three types of popcorn — caramel, caramel with nuts, and white cheddar. A copper kettle cooks the caramel, filling the Boardwalk with that unmistakable Fisher’s aroma. It’s been that way since 1937.
“We sell thousands of buckets a day,” said Leigh Tyler, a 13-year employee. “We have our regulars,” some of whom show up in their Sunday best, straight from church.
In recent years, Fisher’s has doubled the size of its building and developed a thriving mail order business from its Web site (www.fisherspopcorn.com). You can have a tubs as huge as 6 1/2 gallons delivered in just a few days.
“We’ve sent quite a few orders to Iraq,” Tyler said. “Our popcorn keeps. Buy it now, and it’ll be good until Christmas, or even later.”
