Special counsel Robert Mueller has issued a subpoena to the Trump Organization for documents related to Russia and other topics, according to a report.
The subpoena was delivered in the last few weeks, sources told the New York Times. It marks the first time Mueller has ordered the production of documents related to Trump’s businesses.
Mueller is reportedly expanding his investigation, which focuses on Russian meddling in the 2016 election, to include whether foreign money played a role in financing Trump’s political activities.
Neither the White House nor Alan Futerfas, a lawyer representing the Trump Organization, returned a request for comment by the New York Times.
According to the New York Times, there is no indication the Trump Organization will fight Mueller’s subpoena, and the company has obeyed other requests for documents from congressional committees conducting their own investigations into Russian meddling.
Recent reports indicate witnesses meeting with Mueller and his team have been questioned about a potential project in Moscow. In 2015, Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime personal attorney and an executive vice president at the Trump Organization, discussed with a real estate developer the possibility for a Trump Tower in Moscow.
Felix Sater, the developer and a longtime Trump business associate, alleged he had ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In an email to Cohen, Sater suggested the real estate deal would help Trump win the White House.
Trump has warned before that if Mueller began looking into his family’s finances unrelated to Russia, he would be crossing a line.
