Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., claimed Monday that Orlando shooter Omar Mateen’s father was a member of the Taliban.
“His father was clearly an extremist, a Taliban member. And properly done, he wouldn’t have been admitted, I think,” Sessions told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Monday night.
Mateen, the U.S. citizen who killed nearly 50 people at an Orlando nightclub over the weekend, was born in New York to Afghan immigrant parents.
But U.S. officials have not confirmed that the father, Seddique Mir, was an actual member of the Afghan Taliban. Reports indicate he supported the group, but not was not affiliated with or a part of it.
