Fighting in Anbar

ISIS has made its greatest gains and won its most significant victories in Iraq’s Anbar province. This is where the offensive against ISIS is expected to begin, sometime in the next few months, with an attempt to retake the city of Mosul. But while preparations for that campaign are underway, ISIS remains on the offensive.

Loveday Morris and Mustafa Salim of the Washington Post reports that:

Anbar’s provincial council called for “immediate and urgent military reinforcements” after [an] attack on the town of al-Baghdadi, which began in the early morning. Ayn al-Asad air base — where some 320 U.S. personnel have been training Iraqi troops and tribal fighters — lies five miles west of the town.
