Ivanka Trump urges unity after Democrats retake the House

The president’s daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump urged unity among Americans after Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives, leaving Congress split with Republicans holding the Senate majority.

Despite her father’s party losing the House majority, Trump said the “real winner” is the country because voter turnout was especially high for a nonpresidential election cycle.

“Both political parties got good news yesterday, but the real winner is America,” Trump wrote on Instagram. “With record turnout and sky-high participation, we saw an engaged, plugged-in democratic process at work. Today, it’s time to come together as Americans and work toward solutions that benefit all!”

During his news conference Wednesday, President Trump blamed Republicans who lost for their refusal to embrace him during the campaign. If they had supported him, Trump said, they would have won their races.

Trump also expressed a willingness to negotiate with Democrats on legislation, including healthcare and infrastructure, and said he respects that the Democratic Party “sticks together.”

“It really could be a beautiful bipartisan type of situation,” the president said.
