BMX tricksters put Howard principals, students to the test

Students at two Howard schools received a unique reward Thursday for raising money for their PTAs: They subjected their principals to death-defying stunts by a group of BMX stunt riders.

“This is the stunt team,” said Monica Haynes of Great American Fundraising, introducing professional BMX riders Lane George, Joey Scarborough and Dan Sieg. The fundraising organization put on the BMX demonstration.

“Who wants Joey to jump over them? How about Principal Motley?” Sieg shouted, referring to Robert Motley, principal of Patuxent Valley Middle School.

The students cheered as the stunt team put a chair on the platform connecting two ramps.

Scarborough sped down the 9-foot-tall vertical ramp, took aim and knocked the chair off the ramp.

“It?s time,” Sieg said as George assisted Motley to his throne.

Without warning, Scarborough took off, rocketing up and down the ramp, picking up speed. Soon he was airborne and safely over Motley?s head ? landing hard with a thump on the other side.

Motley, unharmed, stood and wiped sweat from his forehead and stepped down.

For their next trick, four students lay on the ground with Sieg and Scarborough. George raced toward them, went airborne and landed cleanly on asphalt. The guys did one last run and finished with a back-flip.

The team then entertained students from Bollman Bridge Elementary School, the other school rewarded for raising more than $20,000 with Patuxent Valley Middle.

“I?m not worried about getting jumped over,” said Tricia McCarthy, assistant principal for Bollman and the stunt team?s second victim.

But she hadn?t seen Motley?s experience.
