National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci said he “strongly supports” actions California Gov. Gavin Newsom and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo took to lock down their states during the coronavirus outbreak.
“There are places, regions, states, cities in this country that being are being stressed much, much more than the country as a whole,” Fauci said Friday at a White House press conference. The virologist said places such as California and New York had some “rather strong issues” that they addressed with stay-at-home orders that he “strongly supports.”
Cuomo ordered nonessential workers on Friday to stay at home. “This is the most drastic action we can take,” the New York Democrat said. “We need everyone to be safe. Otherwise, no one can be safe.”
Newsom issued a similar order on Thursday. The Democrat said he is “confident” the state’s residents would follow the order in order to “bend the curve” showing disease rates escalating.
