Behold what Donald Trump, Elizabeth Warren, Twitter, and the knowledge that media fetishizes Twitter reporting hath wrought:
Can’t wait.
Trump, ever the messenger of quotable insults, has used his Twitter feed this campaign more for public elations than PR. “Political pros”, partisans, the press — they’re all rapt when the presumptive Republican nominee for president throws down on the social media platform that has helped preserve politics as a business for serious adults.
That includes Warren, the Massachusetts senator whose own brand of fiery populism has energized progressives. Dating to the night of the Indiana primary May 3, she has condemned and taunted Trump on where else but Twitter, vowing to ensure that his “toxic stew of hatred & insecurity never reaches the White House.”
In the nine days since, and especially the last week, Trump and Warren have exchanged ferocious volleys that could only be described like a rap battle.
Or like the opening round of Marvin Hagler versus Tommy Hearns.
Or, why not, like Rocky Balboa versus Ivan Drago.
Or like Salon.
Indeed, few things in life are more glorious than a United States senator and a major party’s presidential nominee tweeting at each other. And it’s the spectacle of the medium that matters more than the content.
The news here is that Donald Trump and Elizabeth Warren have been on Twitter, tweeting things. What things? Doesn’t much matter. Just embed it all in an article, and make sure you highlight the part where Trump calls Warren “goofy” and Warren gets back at Trump with “Weak!” That was a good one, because you know how Trump always ends his tweets with “Sad!” Maybe this can go viral.
And if it doesn’t, well: “There are signs that the tweet-off will continue into the summer and fall.” Plenty of days of fresh content left on the calendar.
