China’s Xi Jinping has made a great leap forward into an even more prestigious position.
Senior party officials attended a meeting Thursday in Beijing, where they approved a decision to reassess the party’s 100-year history and elevate Jinping to the same level as Mao Zedong. The officials called Jinping the nation’s most powerful head of state in decades, praising his leadership and contributions to the country, according to the New York Times.
“[Jinping’s leadership] has solved many tough problems that were long on the agenda but never resolved and accomplished many things that were wanted but never got done,” a communique from the officials read. “With this, it has prompted historic achievements and historic shifts in the cause of the party and the country.”

The cementing of Jinping among the likes of Zedong boosts his highly probable chances at securing another five-year term in 2022. Should he claim another term, it would mark his third tenure in office. It would also break the established pattern of Chinese leaders staying in power for only two terms.
Jinping eliminated term limits on China’s presidency in 2018, allowing the possibility for him to lead China as long as he wishes or even as long as he lives. Going into 2022, he faces no rival challenging him, according to the outlet.
