One police officer killed and two others injured in Phoenix shooting

Three police officers in Phoenix, Arizona, were harmed in a shooting Sunday night after reporting to an emergency call about a man acting erratically.

Police were called to the home of Jacob Emry Mcilveen, 22, after his roommates reported that he had been demonstrating concerning behavior. Cmdr. Greg Carnicle, a 31-year veteran of the police force, arrived at the scene to address the situation alongside two other officers, Marissa Dowhan and Alicia Hubert.

The three spoke to Mcilveen from the front steps of his home without issue. The situation escalated after Mcilveen ran back into the home and slammed the door on the officers. The three officers followed him into the home and up the stairs to his room. Mcilveen shot all three of the officers on the staircase, authorities say.

Carnicle, a father of four who was set to retire in the fall, was killed in the shooting. Both Dowhan and Hubert were rescued from the home and are expected to recover fully.

Mcilveen remained holed up in his room for several hours while officers worked to save the lives of the three who had been shot. The Mcilveen eventually came out of the house armed with a handgun and was shot and killed by police.

Britt London, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, mourned Carnicle’s death, saying: “He loved being a Phoenix police officer. He decided to take on this last assignment, which was basically responsible for all patrol operations, working nights and weekends. Who would imagine that at 31 years, this is the shift you would choose.”

London continued: “It just speaks to his character. He loved police work and working out here with officers and keeping the community safe.”
