CAPTAIN COOK, Hawaii (AP) — Rescuers are searching for a 15-year-old tourist who was swept out to sea while hiking on the Big Island.
The Coast Guard says Tyler Madoff was hiking with a tour group along the shore near the Captain Cook monument in Kealakekua Bay Wednesday.
The Coast Guard says the group stopped to rest in a tide pool when a set of waves swept Tyler away. Fire officials say a 14-year-old boy was also swept away, but he was picked up by a private boat and treated at Kona Hospital.
The Coast Guard searched through the night and the fire department resumed searching at daybreak with a helicopter, rescue boat and dive teams.
Tyler’s father has asked local residents with personal boats to help with the search.
