Sunday Scientist to explore Potter-style chemistry

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The next Sunday with a Scientist program at the University of Nebraska State Museum of Natural History is inspired by the magical chemistry in the books and movies about “Harry Potter.”

The event is scheduled to run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at Morrill Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus.

“Chemistry-Harry Potter Style” will be led by Rebecca Lai. She’s an associate professor in the UNL Department of Chemistry. She and several graduate students will introduce visitors to some of the wizarding wonders that exist in the real world. Topics include the chemistry of gold, food chemistry, plant science, disappearing ink, fireworks and the invisibility effect.

Lai teaches an undergraduate course called A Muggle’s Guide to Harry Potter’s Chemistry, or Chemistry 192H.
