FBI says man who planned to bomb hospital during pandemic killed himself

The FBI said a Missouri man planning to bomb a hospital near Kansas City killed himself when he was served an arrest warrant.

Timothy Wilson, 36, fatally shot himself in the head on March 24 after agents attempted to arrest him for the plot, the FBI said Friday. Investigators said Wilson harbored anti-government views and had planned the bombing because he was upset about the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic. An autopsy determined that FBI agents shot Wilson as well, and it is not clear whether Wilson shot himself before or after they opened fire, the Associated Press reported.

Wilson had been under investigation since last year, when he began talking about building explosives with 24-year-old Jarrett Smith, an Army infantry soldier who was arrested in September. The FBI said Smith considered attacking 2020 Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke and a U.S. news network. He also expressed the desire to join the Azov Battalion, a far-right Ukrainian paramilitary group.

According to investigators, Wilson planned to detonate a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in the parking lot of Belton Regional Medical Center, which is located in Cass County, Missouri. Two days before the attempted arrest, Wilson and an undercover FBI agent went to the hospital and did a dry run of the attack.

Records showed other places Wilson considered targeting included the Walmart headquarters, Islamic centers, and a nuclear plant.
