School Board to hear ideas on redistricting

Corrine Pavuk?s daughter kept her friendships together because she moved with more than 100 students from Worthington Elementary School in Ellicott City to Waterloo Elementary School in Columbia three years ago.

“Kids are really resilient, and my daughter had a good experience at Waterloo,” said Pavuk.

As the Howard County School Board reviews proposed redistricting proposals tonight, it will have to consider moves that parents say will disrupt their children?s lives.

“My goal is to get a better understanding of who we?re moving where and what the enrollment results will be,” said School Board Member Diane Mikulis.

School officials understand the importance of maintaining friendships, but redistricting is necessary to balance enrollment in a new elementary school that will open up next year in Ellicott City, said Joel Gallihue, director of school planning, in a previous Examiner article.

The moves are necessary for the “greater good,” he said.

The Northfield Elementary School PTA has helped inform parents about the proposals, which include 105 students moving from the school to the new elementary school and 33 pupils moving to Thunder Hill Elementary Schoolin Columbia, said Northfield PTA President Sandi Smith.

The proposed redistricting plans involve:

» Twelve elementary schools with 1,269 pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade to balance enrollment in the northern and northeastern regions of the county

» Four middle schools with 217 students in grades 6 through 8 to provide relief to Elkridge Landing and Glenwood middle schools
