Ilhan Omar tells Liz Cheney: ‘You never met a Muslim you didn’t want to villify’

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., escalated her war of words with Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., on Monday, claiming the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney has “deep seeded hate” for Muslims.

“Give it up, we all know you never met a Muslim you didn’t want to vilify! Your deep seeded hate and Islamophobia might be a tool to rally your base, but won’t get rid your colleagues. You just have to deal,” Omar said on Twitter.

Omar’s tweet was in response to Cheney saying Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., was looking to “delegitimize the state of Israel.” Omar and Tlaib were the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

“Here’s @RepRashida direct quote, ‘There’s a calming feeling I always tell folks when I think of the Holocaust.’ And her ‘history’ of what happened after is a fantasy based on lies spread to delegitimize the state of Israel,” Cheney said Monday on Twitter.

Cheney was quoting comments Tlaib said from an interview published Saturday with Yahoo News’ podcast “Skullduggery.”

“There’s always kind of a calming feeling I tell folks when I think of the Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports,” Tlaib said.

“And just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy, and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time. And I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that, right, in many ways. But they did it in a way that took their human dignity away, and it was forced on them,” Tlaib added.

Tlaib exchanged fire with Republican critics who said her remarks were anti-Semitic.

Last week, Omar and Cheney engaged in a fight over the Democrats’ reaction to the end of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, which did not find sufficient evidence to establish criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

“Liz Cheney is accusing a committee investigating Russian election interference of…helping Vladimir Putin. This is an impressive lie even for the Cheney family,” Omar said Thursday.

“No surprise @IlhanMN, an anti-Semitic Socialist who slanders US troops and carries water for Hamas and Maduro, doesn’t recognize the truth when she hears it,” Cheney responded Friday.

Cheney said on Monday she was disappointed in the House Democratic leadership for enabling Omar.

“I am deeply sorry for our nation that the House Democratic leadership continues to enable the anti-Semitism in their ranks,” Cheney said.
